Overcoming Your Allergies Naturally

What exactly is an allergy? Well, technically it is unusual immune system response that develops as a reaction to a substance that can cause a wide range of inflammatory reactions; in other words, it is the body’s response to something it does not like.

People can have numerous allergies, and their symptoms can be just as vast as the things they are allergic to. When someone talks about allergies, the first thing that comes to mind is hay fever allergies.

This is one of the most common allergies people suffer from, and it is caused by pollen granules that are floating around in the air during the spring and summer months. Trees, grasses, and molds are all responsible for creating pollen, so it is almost impossible to avoid it. Some symptoms of hay fever include itchy, watery eyes, an itchy throat, and sneezing.

While most of these symptoms are mild and can be treated by over the counter medicines, many people suffer from severe cases and require medical treatment.

Another common allergen trigger is dust mites. These are microscopic, non-parasitic, eight-legged organisms that live in dust in our homes. They live in fabric such as mattresses, couches, and even clothing. While there is no way to completely rid a home of these small creatures, there are ways of controlling them.

For example, frequently washing bedding and stuffed toys to cut down on the mite population in a home. Humans are allergic to dust mite droppings; coming in contact with them can cause itchy, red skin, sneezing, and even more severe symptoms such as asthma attacks. Allergy relief from dust mites can come in the form of soothing creams, eye drops, or pills.

Yet another allergy is a byproduct of modern living; smoke and pollutants in the air. Individuals in largely populated areas such as London, Los Angeles, and Tokyo are exposed to large amounts of carbon dioxide from cars, sulfur and nitrogen oxides from coal, and carbon monoxide from natural gas.

These individuals are at risk for serious respiratory allergic reactions such as asthma. Symptoms of respiratory allergic reactions include gasping, wheezing, difficulty breathing, coughing, and shortness of breath. An asthma attack happens when the pathways of the throat, bronchial tubes, and lungs become inflamed due to an irritant.

When these sensitive tissues become inflamed, they swell, closing off air pathways. An episode of these tissues becoming irritated suddenly is referred to as an asthma attack. In severe cases, untreated asthma attacks can be fatal.

Another form of more serious allergy is a food allergy. A food allergy is an irregular reaction to a certain food or food group that is triggered by a specific reaction in the immune system and expressed by specific symptoms. People can be allergic to a certain food or food group, and perhaps not even know it; other individuals are not so lucky.

Ingestion of an irritating food in severe cases can cause death. Symptoms can begin with an itching in the mouth and throat, followed by problems swallowing or breathing. As the allergen travels through the digestive tract and enters the bloodstream, skin reactions such as hives can break out, followed by gastrointestinal symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea. If the person is severely allergic, they can develop anaphylaxis, which is a sudden drop in blood pressure, often causing shock.

If anaphylactic individuals are left untreated, death can occur quickly. The only treatment for anaphylaxis is an injection of epinephrine.
Epinephrine is another word for adrenaline, and it quickly reverses anaphylactic symptoms. Many foods, medicines, or insect stings can cause these types of allergic reactions.

Some foods include dairy and milk products, egg whites, shellfish (shrimp, lobster, clams), fish (trout, halibut), and nuts (peanuts mainly). Individuals with these food allergies must be extremely careful about the products they purchase and the restaurants they patronize. Many of today’s food items are processed in plants that also package nuts or dairy products.
If the item eaten has come in contact with a reactionary food, that can cause an allergic episode. When dining out, individuals with food allergies need to make sure there are no traces of their trigger foods in their menu choices. For instance, a dish prepared with peanut oil can cause a reaction. People with this particular allergy are encouraged to carry around an epinephrine kit, such as an EpiPen, and a medical identification bracelet, in case of emergency.

Allergy relief can come in various forms, some of which have lightly been touched on. For individuals with general hay fever symptoms, over the counter remedies can include products such as Benadryl, which is diphenhydramine, an antihistamine that works by blocking histamine, which is an element that helps cause an allergic reaction.

Other products can include nasal sprays that work by calming the linings of sinuses and nasal cavities, opening airways for easier breathing and soothing eye drops that calm irritated eyelids and also block histamines.

We live in an allergy-laden world, and being informed is an important part of living peacefully, cohabitating with the irritants around us.
