Finding the Light in your Dark Depression

The term depression is sometimes used to describe a low mood or temporary feeling of extreme sadness. There is a prevailing feeling of hopelessness and a loss of interest in the things one once enjoyed.

Depression in the clinical sense is much more than that. Real long lasting clinical depression is an illness that can affect a person’s entire life. When a person is in a state of depression they will find it near impossible to manage even the simplest tasks in life. Just getting out of bed in the morning is a monumental accomplishment for the truly depressed.

For some, clinical depression is a once occurring event. This is a situational depression and is usually treated by handling the problem or problems that preceded the depression. A death or traumatic event can spark a very real and debilitating depression. For others, depression becomes a way of life.

These people cannot point to one specific event that may have contributed to their depression. Instead they must seek to control the chemical and behavioural issues that affect their mood. Many times antidepressants can help the chronically and chemically depressed lift their mood long enough for behavioural techniques to work.

Depression can also be part of a disorder called manic depression or bipolar disorder. For these victims their mood swings wildly between extreme highs and lows. As the name implies, manic-depressives can seem uncontrollably exuberant at times. They will shop impulsively and wreak havoc on the lives of those closest to them.

When they hit the other end of the spectrum they may be inconsolably depressed. They are unable to perform the normal functions of life and may become extremely suicidal. It is important that a person with manic depression be treated for both spectrums of their illness. You cannot simply treat the manic episodes without preparing for the depression. This makes this illness extremely important to diagnose correctly.

Post natal depression is a form of clinical depression that is most common in women after the birth of a child, although men are sometimes affected. It is sometimes referred to as the baby blues, but post natal depression is a more serious condition than the common baby blues. The difference between the two conditions is the seriousness of post natal depression and the temporary baby blues. There has been a strong link between post natal depression and a lack of social support for the new mother.

This suggests that the changing hormones in the mother’s body do not strictly govern post natal depression. While the affects of these hormones are not discounted, they are not the sole reason for post natal depression. Helping a woman cope with her lack of social support and poor socioeconomic outlook could help many women avoid post natal depression.

For those with a severe clinical depression finding treatment can prove to be very difficult. When in the throes of depression it may be impossible for the person to act in his or her own best interest.

A strong support system is needed to help the depressed person recognize their depression and seek help. There are a number of symptoms to watch for in a family member or loved one if you suspect depression. If your loved one’s sleeping habits have changed, whether they are sleeping more or they are suffering from sleeplessness, it may be one of the symptoms of depression.

Watch their eating habits and note if there are any changes. Significant changes are the key to recognizing depression not necessarily eating more or less. Pay attention to a loss of interest in activities they once found enjoyable. There can be feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness, guilt, difficulty in concentration, irritability and a decreased energy. It is very important that these symptoms be discovered before they become dramatically worse and lead to suicidal thoughts.

When seeking treatment there are a number of options available to the clinically depressed. Antidepressants are sometimes effective and can aid in the other forms of treatment. One of the most studied and exciting areas of depression therapy is cognitive behavioural therapy.

Studies have shown this therapy to be as effective as drug therapies in some patients. With cognitive behavioural therapy a patient is encouraged to keep track of events that are significant and their associated feelings in a diary.

The patient should question their assumptions about events and decide whether a feeling or thought pattern is realistic. They are encouraged to try new ways of thinking and reacting to once problem thoughts. Cognitive behavioural therapy teaches the patient to discard negative emotions and recognize that they are inaccurate or dysfunctional.

This type of therapy is not easy. A person going through cognitive behavioural therapy must work very hard to combat years of negative thoughts. Every person is different in the way their thought processes bring forward negative feelings. It is up to the individual to recognize their own thought patterns and work to change them.

There is a great deal of hope for people diagnosed with clinical depression. The research into this life threatening illness continues and with increased research many people will avoid a lifetime of pain and anguish.
