Men’s Health Problems - Needless Suffering in Silence

Many men are plagued by health problems that they are too embarrassed to admit and seek help for. Because of this, they do not realize how many other men are affected just like them and just how common and or treatable their conditions are. They are needlessly suffering in silence.

Erectile dysfunction, or impotence, is a male sexual problem that affects between 35% and 50% of men. ED is the inability to maintain an erection, and all men experience ED at one point or another in life. This ailment has many causes, many of which are treatable.

ED can also be a symptom of a much more serious health concern, and working closely with a physician can cure the ED as well as a potential life threatening condition such as diabetes. Chronic ED can cause not only relationship problems, but also emotional problems in the sufferer. ED is not something that is inevitable; it is not a consequence of getting older; it is a very real medical condition with some very real solutions.

Erectile Dysfunction (impotence) can be caused by psychological factors such as job stress and low self esteem. Depression and anxiety problems can also affect ED. Individual or couples therapy can be very effective in treating the underlying problem that is manifesting itself in the form of ED.

Medical treatments such as Viagra and Levitra are selective enzyme inhibitors available from a doctor that work by increasing levels of cGMP, a chemical vital to erections. More serious underlying causes of Erectile Dysfunction (impotence) can include high blood pressure and diabetes.

This inhibits the ability to have an erection because blood flow is constricted due to narrowed arteries; also uncontrolled blood sugar levels can impair nerve impulses and blood flow, also impairing erection.

Medications can contribute to ED; check the label of all prescription and over the counter medications. Many medications include Erectile Dysfunction (impotence) as a stated side effect. Consulting with a physician can help men decide which treatment route is appropriate for them.

Premature ejaculation affects between 30% and 40% of men, and characterized by the inability to control or stave off ejaculation as long as desired, and is one of the most common sexual concerns men have. Studies have shown this condition is more common in young men, but that it can occur at any stage of life.

This condition not only creates relationship frustration, but also self esteem issues; many men believe their PE is “all in their mind”, and that there is no help for it, thus they are doomed to never satisfy himself or his partner. This is simply not the case. A thorough examination by a physician is the first step; this will help the doctor in making a diagnosis of primary or secondary PE. In other words, has Premature ejaculation been affecting the patient for his entire life, or is it something that began recently.

This will lead the physician down the path towards the most effective treatment. Things such as drug and alcohol abuse can contribute to PE, as can stress, depression, or anxiety disorders. A physician may suggest relaxation methods and imagery to ease stress and anxiety during intercourse. Exercises such as “squeeze and stop” techniques involve both partners in overcoming PE, and there are prescription medications that can relieve Premature ejaculation stress.

Sexual performance problems are not the only condition concerning men. Shy bladder syndrome, or paruresis, is a social anxiety disorder that affects 17 million men a year. This syndrome is characterized by the inability to urinate in the presence of others, such as in a public restroom, or in an unfamiliar place.

This anxiety can be caused by many factors, including cultural and sociological factors. Self esteem issues such as concern over penis size tops the list of reasons for paruresis. Paruresis also known as Shy bladder or Pee shy is more than just embarrassment; it can interfere with daily life by causing disruptions in daily routine and restricting the individual’s life.

There are many so called “work-around” that relieve the symptoms of paruresis, such as not drinking a lot of fluids, avoiding large or busy public restrooms, or waiting until a bathroom is empty before entering. While these solutions may help avoid situations where paruresis can occur, they do not address the psychological roots that are causing the symptoms. Treatments such as cognitive behavior therapy and biofeedback can help alleviate the stress induced by paruresis; medications such as anti-anxiety drugs (Xanax) may be more appropriate for certain individuals.

These issues are important issues in men’s health today. The lack of conversation between men and between men and their doctors is suppressing most men from receiving the help that can improve their quality of life.

Knowing that they are not alone in experiencing these things should influence men positively, encouraging them to speak with their doctor about any issues they may be experiencing. Suffering from something which has a simple treatment or cure is unnecessary suffering, and no man should go through it.
