Skin Disorders and their Therapy Treatments

Skin disorders are basically problems pertaining to skin. Eczema, psoriasis, hives, rashes, blemishes, the list goes on and on, and all are skin disorders. They can range in severity from a mild irritation due to a peanut allergy to conditions that cause permanent scarring. Skin disorder treatment can vary in technique just as widely as the irritant possibilities can.

Acne is the most common skin disorder, and it doesn’t just affect teens. Acne can cause problems well into adulthood, causing irritation, infection, and possible scarring. Blemishes develop when dead skin cells and oil block the skin’s pores.

This blockage can then become infected and pus builds up, causing redness and irritation, and acne takes many forms. Blackheads are pores filled with hardened oil; the ends of the buildup protrude out of the skin and turn black due to oxidation.

Whiteheads raised white spots in more delicate areas; they are formed in the same manner as blackheads, except that these blemishes do not get exposed to air, and oxidation does not get the chance to occur, so the oil does not turn black. Pustules are small inflammations filled with pus that develop on the skin surface.

Similar to pustules are papules; these are deeper inflammatory lesions that are elevated and hard. When compared to pustules, papules have a longer healing time and can result in scarring. Cysts are thicker, yellow pus filled inflammations. Quite often, papular acne forms into a cyst, and they often form singularly. While acne can develop anywhere on the body, the face, neck, and shoulders are the most common locations for acne flare-ups.

Eczema is another common skin condition. Eczema is a broad term used to describe any number of skin irritations. Generally, eczema defined as patches of very itchy, red, dry skin.

The patches come and go, and may or may not respond to treatment. Eczema is not contagious and cannot be cured. Eczema frequently starts out as an itchy sensation on the skin, and when scratched, a rash begins to appear. Eczema patches can become thick and scaly, and the skin may sometimes dry out and flake off in thick sheets, leaving irritated skin underneath.

Others may experience blistering, with small pustules that ooze. Eczema can develop on any area of the body, but hands, arms, and the face are some of the most common areas affected. This disorder affects a large number of infants, but it is usually grown out of and goes away on its own; on the other hand, a large percentage of adults are sufferers, and there is no known cause.

There is some speculation that genetics plays a part in its development, but more commonly accepted is the theory that exposure to environmental factors encourages its development. This line of thought describes eczema as an allergic reaction to products such as perfumes and dyes found in laundry detergents.

Common eczema treatments for eczema include frequent moisturizing with products containing corticosteroids, applications of topical antibiotics to ward off infection, and avoidance of harsh soaps and laundry products. There is no cure for eczema, and effective treatment varies from person to person.

Psoriasis is an inflammatory skin condition, similar to eczema. There are five subcategories of psoriasis, each with their own specific symptoms. Psoriasis is probably the oldest recorded skin condition, but as with eczema, there is no cure, only treatment. Individuals affected by psoriasis experience a broad range of symptoms, including patches of raised, red skin covered by silvery-white scales.

These are general symptoms of the most common variety of psoriasis, known as plaque psoriasis. These patches frequently form on elbows, knees, the lower back, and the scalp. Other sufferers may experience small red spots much like hives; small white pustules surrounded by itchy, red skin; smooth, yet irritated lesions in the crooks of elbows or knees; or extremely large patches of red, painful, extremely itchy skin.

Psoriasis is very painful, almost always itching and more often than not causing the skin to crack and bleed. Unlike eczema, which comes and goes, and can eventually be grown out of, psoriasis is a lifelong struggle with no cure; the only form of relief is frequently adjusted lifelong therapy.

Treatment depends on the type and severity of the psoriasis; some people have such mild symptoms that they don’t know they are there, or that can be easily treated with over the counter moisturizers. Others suffer from patches so large most of their body is covered, and they can require hospitalization.

Researchers do not yet fully understand what causes this condition; they know it develops in the mid-teenage years, and that it can be passed on through genetics. Some research has shown a suppression of symptoms in kidney transplant patients with psoriasis that took the drug cyclosporine, a potent immunosuppressive medication, indicating the immune system plays a role in the condition.

Further research is being conducted. Most mild to severe psoriasis patients require assistance from their doctor in choosing the appropriate treatment method.
