Phobia Types and their Treatment Options

A phobia is an unreasonable, intense and constant fear of certain activities and situations, persons and things. Patients experiencing phobia has an irrational and excessive fear of a particular object or situation. Obsession with that specific object or situation fills their mind with fear that temporarily robs them of their ability to function normally. A phobia sometimes develops into a panic attack.

Anxiety, stress, depression, inactivity, mental inertia, loss of acumen and elocution are the symptoms that persons show when they experience a phobia. Symptoms may be mild or severe depending on certain physical and mental factors. Some persons who show severe symptoms become unable to communicate to their surroundings for a while.

Phobias are of three types:

Agoraphobia: This phobia relates to the fear of some public places. Persons affected with agoraphobia, fear to be trapped and to have a panic attack in some public places.

Social phobia: It is the fear of public performance or specific social situations. Persons affected with social phobia get easily unnerved in some social situations.

Specific phobias: These phobias relate to the fear of specific situations, objects or activities that pose a threat to phobia-affected persons leading to the loss of physical or emotional control.

Treatment Options

There are some self-care strategies and techniques that will help you do away with the problem whereas behavioral therapy and medicines can also work wonders.

Self-care phobia treatment

Self-care is a better treatment of phobia that medication. The most common way to overcome a phobia is to face the object of fear with all the might. Flinching from facing up to the feared object intensifies the impact of phobia on you. It is not wise at all to escape from the phobic situation. Grit your teeth to tolerate the stress until it disappears. Some people do it with help of their families and friends.

Behavioral Therapy

The principle of behavioral therapy involves gradual exposure and desensitization to the object that is the prime cause of your phobia. During the sessions with the therapist, you will learn certain relaxation techniques to tolerate the phobic situation. The extent of exposure to the object of phobia gradually increases during every session. For example, if a particular bird is the cause of your phobia, the therapy involves you from looking at pictures of the bird to handling the feathers of the bird and feeding it with your own hand. Behavioral therapy also includes utterance of an affirmative saying when you become heavy with stress and dizziness under phobic circumstances.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive behavioral therapy is the best treatment for those who are affected with any of social phobias. This type to therapy requires you to turn from negativity to positivity. The therapy will empower you with some social skills and interpersonal skills that will help you keep your end up in emotionally difficult situations.

Medicines

Medicines are seldom used as a cure for simple phobias. Doctors recommend antidepressants for severe social phobias and agoraphobia. Anti-anxiety medicines like benzodiazepines may also be prescribed at initial stages of medicinal treatment for phobias. Beta-blockers such as propanolol are sometimes recommended to remove the symptoms of social phobias. However, intake of drugs alone is not highly effective as a phobia treatment.
